Meet the 2025 FuJET Council!
-
President - Tito Santare
Greetings everyone.
It is my honor to continue to serve the FuJET Council as this year's Council President. Throughout college, I served in three consecutive student councils, so getting involved in small groups that help people has been an interest of mine for a while. I've been in Fukushima for 13 years, first teaching in Kitakata for 14 months before finding my current position in Miharu, home of the famous Takizakura.
FuJET has always been an important group for me throughout my time in Japan, so I felt it was time to give back to a group that has helped me immensely over the years. This year I'm really interested in setting up a mix of classic and new events, so if there's any kind of event you'd like FuJET to look into, please contact us online or in person and let us know!

Vice President - Jessica Yeung
Hello~
My name is Jessica Yeung and I am from Vancouver, Canada. I currently live in Aizuwakamatsu City. I am a third-year JET. I currently teach at an elementary, junior high school, and high school.
I like reading, skiing, ice skating, and travelling. I like exploring Japan, so feel free to reach out if you need any recommendations or resources.
When I first came to Fukushima, I really enjoyed exploring the surroundings of the prefecture. I have explored many parts of Fukushima prefecture, and there is a lot to do and see here. Also, when I first heard about FuJET I participated in many events, so I am really grateful to give back to the community and be a part of the FuJET Council. I am excited to meet many of you and I am looking forward to seeing everyone at our events.

Treasurer - Ella Cuskelly
Hello! I’m Ella, an ALT from Calgary, Canada. I’m lucky to live in Yotsukura, a cozy seaside neighbourhood in sunny Iwaki. I teach at elementary and junior high schools around the northern coast of the city.
FuJET has been a huge part of settling into life in Fukushima. Soon after arrival, there were plenty of events that helped me explore our prefecture–I especially loved the Mt. Azuma hike! I tried my first yakiimo (roasted sweet potato) after that hike, and since that day you’ll never see me pass on the opportunity to eat one. I’m so excited to help out with events this year and keep meeting awesome fellow JETs!
I love reading, running, and travelling—mainly to find great food. I’m also one of the rare vegetarians here, so if you ever need a veg buddy (or anything else!) don’t hesitate to reach out. See you soon!

Media Manager - Mayra Lozano-Roman
Omg look who’s still here! It’s me, soon-to-be third-year JET (after August 2025) and second-year FuJET Council member, Mayra from the United States. I’m based in Fukushima City where I’ve been teaching at an elementary school and junior high school since August 2023!
If I reflect back on my recent activity outside of work, I’ve been going to concerts (a lot of Japanese bands), trying out new restaurants/cafes (I LOVE shaved ice), and hanging out with friends both old and new! I feel like getting around Japan is made fairly easy, so I’d also encourage you to explore new places and get to know somewhere new!!
FuJET has definitely helped me on both ends by introducing me to some cool places and people! Thus, I hope to contribute to your Fukushima experience through our FuJET events. I look forward to seeing you at one of our events!

Graphic Creator - Anjali Nautiyal
Hi! I’m Anjali, a first-year ALT in Koriyama City. Nice to meet you!
I like reading (my favourite author is RF Kuang), scrapbooking, and cooking! Hit me up if you have a book recommendation!
I’m new to the FuJET Council as the Graphic Designer on the media team! FuJET is a great way to explore our lovely prefecture with fun events (have you ever hiked a volcano!?) while meeting other JETS in the area.
Hope to see you around at our events! :)

Digital Content Coordinator - Alexandra De La Hoz
Hello! My name is Alexandra, and I'm from Québec, Canada. I currently live in Shōwa Village, a beautiful community nestled in the mountains of Oku-Aizu.
I'm a second-year ALT working at both the elementary and junior high schools here. While the winters and summers can be challenging, I’ve come to truly love the lifestyle and strong sense of community in Shōwa.
The village is especially known for its traditional ramie fiber craft (karamushi), which is used to create stunning handwoven kimonos, bags, and sandals. If you ever have the chance, please come visit — it’s the perfect place to enjoy the peace and quiet of nature.
In my free time, I love exploring the Aizu region by car — finding rivers, lakes, hidden mountain trails, onsen, and cozy local restaurants and izakayas. I also enjoy skiing in the winter, traveling, being out in nature, and sharing a beer with the locals.
Since moving to Japan, I’ve had an amazing time attending FuJET events. I'm so excited to now be part of the team and help organize the same kinds of events that brought me so much joy and helped me connect with such wonderful people!

Magazine and Website Curator - Nina Acero-Liebman
Hi everyone! I’m Nina, a third-year JET originally from the US. I teach at elementary and junior high schools in Iwaki City, a sunny seaside city known for its beautiful beaches!
In my free time, I like to visit cafes, hot springs, and read. One of my favorite things about Iwaki is the summertime fireworks festival––it’s a must-see!
Last year, I was the Area Support Leader for Iwaki City and really enjoyed being a part of helping my local JET community. This year, I’m excited to be a part of the larger FuJET community as the Newsletter and Website Manager and help show you more of what Fukushima prefecture has to offer! I hope to see you around!
Meet Fukushima’s Area Support Leaders!

Jesse Ludick - Kenpoku Area
Hi everyone!
I'm Jesse, from Johannesburg, South Africa. I have the fortune of being placed in Fukushima City and have just begun my fourth year as an elementary and junior high school ALT. I'm eager to provide any assistance I can as the Kenpoku ASL. Outside of work, I enjoy working out, traveling, cooking, and learning about the rich history of Japan–especially Fukushima!
There are hidden gems waiting to be discovered everywhere from the city back alleys to the inaka (countryside) back roads. Kenpoku has something for everyone, especially for those (like me) who enjoy a good cafe hop and hike. You can also attend one of the many interesting events and festivals that are held year-round. There is a fantastic community here doing their best to breathe life into the region and I hope you'll be a part of it.
Don't hesitate to reach out for anything. Whether it's a chat, advice, or a travel recommendation, I'm here to help!

Yalimar Pagan - Kenchu Area
Hi everyone!
I am a third-year JET based in Koriyama. I’m from the US, where I lived in Texas for about eight years but grew up in Connecticut. I have my Master’s degree in Japanese culture and language, with a focus was on Japanese tattoos.
Currently, I often spend my time traveling in and out of Japan, going to cafes or checking out local events. I also like going on long drives, reading, vintage fashion, and cats.
I’ve really enjoyed my time in Fukushima exploring all the sights the prefecture has to offer (especially my area of Kenchu) as well. From Lake Inawashiro to Abukuma Cave, to Miharu’s great cherry blossom tree, Takizakura, and the Bandai Atami Onsen hot spring town, there is something for everyone here. I’m excited to see what else I discover in Fukushima during my time as ASL!
I’m always around if you have any questions, so please don’t hesitate to contact me!

Melissa Pulido-Jaimes - Kennan Area
Hello! I’m Melissa and I’m the Area Support Leader for the Kennan area.
I arrived in 2023 from California, United States. I’ve lived there my whole life so moving to a new country after college was a big change! I had great support when I first arrived and I can’t wait to pay it forward. Welcome to Fukushima!
I've come to find that Kennan is a humble but charming area to live in. There are many beautiful forests, scenic trails, and hidden gem cafes and restaurants. Fukushima in general has so much to offer both culturally and historically given that it's Japan's third-largest prefecture.
I enjoy filling up my free time with things like listening to music, cooking new recipes, or visiting cafes.
Need anything? Send me an email!

Osama Omar - Aizu Area
I’m Osama Omar, and I’m a third-year JET. I’m originally from Toronto, ON Canada. Although I'm on JET as a Canadian, I was born in Bangladesh and raised in Japan (13 years of my childhood, having graduated from elementary school here).
I am based out of Yanaizu Town, in the Aizu Region, close to Aizuwakamatsu City.
It may be hometown bias, but I keenly feel the Aizu region has some of the best scenic views and activities in all of Tohoku.
The Aizu Region also boasts a rich cultural heritage and remarkable samurai history. Not to mention, it’s home to the most recognized symbol of Aizu and Fukushima, the beloved red cow, Akabeko!
The Akabeko Legend originates in Yanaizu Town, which is popular for its stunning scenery as well as the Mitama Fireworks Festival and the annual Naked-Man Festival at Enzoji Temple. With delectable regional specialties, breathtaking beauty, and lots of onsen hot springs, there is a lot to enjoy in Aizu together!
I am an avid watch enthusiast, a fervent football (soccer) fan, and equally active player. I enjoy running and partake in marathons and regional ekiden tournaments.
In my free time, I love travelling across Japan with my wife Samila and playing with my baby daughter Aisha, as she is still a curious toddler discovering new things.
While being a father keeps me busy, when time allows I also love video games and movies, especially action and adventure ones!
Please don’t hesitate to reach out for anything at all! My family and I are happy to help out in any way, or connect you to the right people.

Ricardo Velasco - Minami-Aizu Area
Hey, I’m Rick from the UK, where the tea is stronger than most people’s enthusiasm.
Minamiaizu is a charming corner of the world where the pace of life is slow, the people are kind, and the nearest convenience store is only a 30-minute drive away. It’s a paradise for nature lovers and a test of endurance for the rest of us.
In the summer, you can hide from the sun on hiking trails up in the mountains, while in the winter, it’s home to some of Fukushima’s best ski resorts, given there’s enough snow to make you question your life choices.
If your dreams involve bears and rice fields, this is the perfect place for you.
Let me know if you’re in the area.

I’m originally from the west coast of Canada and I am the ASL for Iwaki City, Fukushima. Iwaki is a wonderful area with breathtaking beaches, as well as beautiful plum and cherry blossoms.
Iwaki is well known for our stunning coastline made up of seven beaches (each having their own mascot), but we have so many other stunning spots as well!Over the past two years, I have felt genuinely at home in Iwaki. Its people are welcoming and the atmosphere is very comfortable.
If you get the chance, some of my top recommendations would be: Yumoto onsen, Yumoto dinosaur/coal museum, and Aquamarine Fukushima. You’re always welcome in Sunshine Iwaki!
