Fukushima Cafe Spotlight
During the humid heat of summer, and the harsh wind and snow of wintertime, I often find myself retreating indoors to a nice cafe spot with friends. For me, it’s important to have a delicious drink and some relaxing social time in a cosy space after a long week at work.
Whilst I live in Fukushima City, today I want to talk about five cafes around the prefecture you can check out during your time here, along with my menu recommendations! - Molly Noble, FuJET Editor
1.Cafe Hiranaga, Iizaka Onsen Town
With a charming rustic interior, with wooden decor and dried flowers, this cozy little cafe is my absolute favourite pancake spot! After a walk around Iizakamachi and it’s beautiful retro feel, or going to the onsen, this place is incredible. They are very passionate about their coffee, offering different roasts, and serve up seasonal dishes such as hot sandwiches and different pancakes. The classic butter and syrup is a must try!

Recommended menu: Hot coffee with double pancakes with butter and syrup
2. Cafe 120, Fukushima City
Serving up a variety of cakes, pastas and drinks, Cafe 120 is a great lunch spot with balcony seating close to Fukushima Station so you can watch the world go by. Their service is quick and the food is always delicious! They have a good number of seats so there’s usually no wait to be seated, so it’s great if you want to grab a good value set for lunch with friends. I usually get the mushroom pasta with a refreshing iced drink! They have everything from fresh black coffee to floats and elderflower sodas.

3.Blue Mug Coffee, Iwaki
This cafe is a perfect spot for catching up with friends over some delicious baked goods and smooth coffee. A calm, wooden cabin like feel, this was a really nice respite to eat something sweet and relax! There was a variety of freshly baked goods as well as different coffees for sale. Plus, I remember the workers being so talkative with us on our visit, kindly in basic Japanese for us - which is always a plus!

4.Cafe Domani, Soma City
An absolute treasure of a cafe right in the heart of where the 2011 tsunami unfortunately struck its hardest, is Cafe Domani. Owned by a Japanese couple, this cafe is filled to the brim with moomin merchandise! Every available corner is decorated with both vintage and new Moomin collectibles, and they even have a corner of handcrafted objects and merchandise for sale. The food was so lovingly prepared, we were lucky to get the Valentine’s special cake set which was so cute and also yummy. If you’re visiting the Soso and Soma area, this is not to miss.
Address: Nakadai-256 Kashiwazaki, Soma, Fukushima 976-0034
Recommended menu: The seasonal cake set
5.Coffee no Machi, Fukushima City
A retro kissaten style cafe, this was one of the first places I visited when I hastily searched ‘coffee spots’ when I was wandering around on a hot day! This place serves up everything from toasties to scones and parfaits. The atmosphere is so rustic and the food is delicious. The space is surprisingly large inside and is a good place to catch up with a group of friends! (Omurice photo courtesy of Kanchi)
Address: 〒960-8041 Fukushima, Omachi, 2−14 加藤ビル 2F
Recommended menu: Scone set and coffee (or chocolate parfait on a hot day!)
That’s it for my five recommended spots today, I hope during your time you can check out one of these spots around the prefecture and enjoy some delicious treats!
